Thunder of
Grass
First Significant collection (one
of the last books under the celebrated Cresset Press imprint) poems
including early drafts of Overtunes and Stages of Solar Eclipse.
Three Trees
Somewhere I read the aloe tree -
White bloom above, deep shade beneath,
With bitter sap and spikey leaf -
Will only flower one year in three.
Love flowers like the aloe tree.
Her wattle cut for wizardry,
There in the coven of wood
The gods feast on her poison blood,
Her berries red for all to see -
Love's fruit hangs on the rowan tree.
Somebody once described for me
The lenten purple of the shoot
The tarnished gold flung at the root,
A gallows white for treachery!
Love flowers like the judas tree.
